Shawn is an experienced educator with a sustained history of passionate teaching, engaged leadership, and forward-thinking curriculum development. Before coming to Achieve Now, Shawn held teaching positions at Temple University, Villanova University, and Williams College, where he was recognized for his innovative teaching. As a liaison for Stanford University's renowned Center for Teaching and Learning, he provided customized teaching services and rigorous classroom observations and analyses, and conducted pedagogy workshops focused on specific teaching strategies, recommending unique situational learning approaches. He is thrilled to be leading an organization dedicated to making a lasting contribution to children's lives.
DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMS
Lizzy has spent the past eight years working as an educator for learners of all ages. She hails from Pittsburgh, where she worked for over three years as a teaching artist in a number of Pittsburgh public middle school classrooms. She came to Philadelphia to pursue a Master's degree at Villanova and has since planted herself here as a non-profit educator. Lizzy most recently served as the Education Associate at the Wilma Theater, where she worked with Philadelphia public high school students. She is passionate about shaping young minds and making a difference in the lives of Philadelphia's youth. Lizzy is honored and proud to be helping to fulfill Achieve Now's mission of bringing Philadelphia schoolchildren to grade level reading.
Director of education
Casey Styons is an experienced middle school English teacher and certified reading specialist. After studying English education at the University of Delaware and earning an MA in Language and Literacy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where she provided literacy interventions for children of varying ages and skill levels, Casey returned to the classroom as a middle school English teacher in Boston, MA and, most recently, Morton Grove, IL. She’s excited to join the Achieve Now team in their efforts to nurture better readers and change educational outcomes for children in Philadelphia.
Prior to serving as Achieve Now's Development Coordinator, Julia served as the Academic Program Coordinator at Row New York, a nonprofit that pairs the sport of rowing with academic support to transform the lives of youth in New York City. Julia is a recent graduate of the FAO Schwarz Family Foundation Fellowship, a program that develops future leaders in the non-profit and social sector and strengthens high-quality nonprofit organizations in the New York, Philadelphia, and Boston areas. Julia is thrilled to be applying her passion for youth development and education to Achieve Now’s work to improve the literacy performance of Philadelphia youth.
A Pennsylvania native, Savannah is excited to serve public school students in Philadelphia. She majored in Sociology at Harvard College, during which time she mentored elementary school girls, served as a camp counselor, and tutored a kindergartener. At Harvard, she also organized and advocated for a summer program and other resources for low-income and first generation incoming students, an experience that furthered her interest in educational interventions and extracurricular programming as crucial components of student success. In the future, Savannah plans to pursue a career in public interest law at an organization that protects children's rights.
Chauntia is a certified teacher with a BA in Early Childhood Education from Chestnut Hill College. In addition to being a Kindergarten teacher for the School District of Philadelphia, Chauntia has worked for the American Institutes for Research, the Sylvan Learning Center, and conducted educational seminars throughout the tri-state area and Maryland. She joined Achieve Now as a Reading Specialist in Fall 2016, and is thrilled to help shape and cultivate lifelong learners. Chauntia is the author of a children’s book, I’m Beautiful!
Kathleen is an experienced teacher who has worked in education for the last seven years. Originally from Oregon, Kathleen studied social work and Spanish at Evergreen State College. After graduation, she taught at a Native American elementary school in Washington State before teaching English in South Korea and Guatemala, where she also ran an after-school English academy. Kathleen now enjoys living in South Philadelphia; she has been a Reading Specialist for Achieve Now since Fall 2015.
Raena holds an MFA in Poetry from The Ohio State University; she is the author of GILT, a collection of poems. Most recently, Raena held an Instructorship at College of Charleston, located in her South Carolina hometown. Prior to that, Raena served as a visiting lecturer at high schools and colleges across the midwest and eastern United States, facilitating creative writing workshops and adapting craft talks for a range of students at differing levels in their educations. Raena joined the Achieve Now team in the fall of 2017, and is honored to be implementing her passion for education in promoting literacy by working closely with Philadelphia's youth.
Camille has been an avid reader and proponent of literacy and education for the majority of her life. Camille is a proud graduate of Florida International University, and joins the Achieve Now team after two years of AmeriCorps service through City Year, where she gained first-hand knowledge of the School District of Philadelphia and understanding of the urgent need for more people who care about literacy and students' development. She is proud to be one of these people, and excited to help mold, inspire and teach the next generation. She joined Achieve Now in 2017.
Alex is an experienced educator who has served students across the country. He holds a B.A. in English and Social Work from the University of Michigan, and has taught in school districts in Washington D.C., Detroit, Providence and San Francisco. During the 2016-2017 school year, he taught English and History at an independent school in San Francisco, where he designed his own curriculum and provided highly individualized, one-to-one support for his students. Alex has also designed literacy-themed summer camps for students living in Ann Arbor public housing developments, and has facilitated creative writing workshops for incarcerated youth in the state of Michigan. He joined Achieve Now in the fall of 2017 and is excited to learn the city of Philadelphia as he bikes around to different schools.
